THE WHOLE ENCHILADA
The story of the rich young man is vital for those wanting to be serious Christians. In Mark 10:21, Jesus says, “One thing you lack…Go sell everything you have…then come follow me.” On first glance, it seems to be about selling our material possessions and giving the proceeds to the poor. But I think Jesus is getting at something much more difficult to do: handing Him the deed to our mind, will, and emotions – our very self.
Jesus wants us to give up all we think is ours and be totally dependent on Him. The whole enchilada, as my brother Bill says. Not $1,000 or even $100,000, but all of us – every thought, every word, every deed. It’s impossible for us to do that on our own, however, since self cannot throw out self. We need the power, guidance, and influence of the Holy Spirit to do so.
