Stop Doing What You Don’t Want to Do is the new book I bring along with me to county jails and rehab houses like Adult and Teen Challenge. You can click on this LINK for more information.
The simple point of the book, which applies to all of us, not just addicts and criminals, is that in many areas, we keep doing what we don’t want to do. Take food, for example. You want to lose weight, but the addiction to food is too strong. You promise you will eat more sensibly today, and you don’t. It goes on like this day after day after day. Gambling is another such addiction and pornography and playing electronic games and anger and saying mean things. There is no end to the list of addictions.
“If you keep doing the same things over and over again and expect different results, that’s the definition of insanity.” If you want to stop doing what you don’t want to do, you need to try something totally different. And that difference is following Jesus Christ so closely that you can touch the hem of His garment. I’m not talking about praying for God’s help to stop your addiction, whatever it is. You’ve done that thousands of times. I’m suggesting you simply follow Jesus and be obedient to Him in everything you do. You’ll find out what those things are by reading the Bible, especially the New Testament, especially the Gospel of John, especially chapters 14-17. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose but your addiction, whatever it may be.
