It is heart wrenching to hear a young believer cry out, “Why me? Why do I have cancer? It isn’t fair.”
In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33
This is Jesus’ answer to the young woman’s lament. This world is filled with death, disease, and destruction. We live in a fallen world where bad things happen to good people. You only have to look around you to see the devastation caused by cancer, heart failure, hideous deformities, car accidents, and tornadoes ripping through populated areas killing countless poor souls and destroying houses and buildings.
But…Jesus has overcome all the world’s chaos by His crucifixion and resurrection. He has overcome death, disease, and destruction, if not in this world then in the next.
So the real question is not, “Why me?” It is “What will I do now that this has happened?” God did not cause the young woman’s cancer; the fallen world did. Now Jesus is standing alongside her to bring her through this and help her be the best person with cancer that she can be. She doesn’t know what her future will be; but Jesus knows and she can take heart from that.
