What close relationship do you have where you do all the talking, especially when meeting with someone more knowledgeable than yourself? But isn’t that what we often do with God in prayer, whose thoughts and ways are higher than ours? Don’t we too often tell Him what to do with a particular person we’re praying for? “Oh, Lord, please help my son get the job he’s interviewing for today.”
Dallas Willard wrote a book called HEARING GOD. I highly recommend you read it. My favorite chapter is “Guidelines for Hearing from God.” I have found that asking God questions is a good way to involve Him in my prayer life. “Lord, is my son interviewing for a job that is part of your plan for him? Or is there something else better?” Then still your mind and listen.
