BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT

Sunday, March 31st, 2019

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Poor in soul would have been a better way to put it to agree with my topography of men and women – body, soul, and spirit. But who am I to question what Jesus said?

There are some 256 meanings of the word run. Why can’t there be more than one meaning to the word spirit?

Spirit means breath in Latin – spiritus. In Genesis 2:7, God breathed into Adam and gave him life. So spirit means life.

Now the verse makes sense. Blessed are those who are poor in their own lives [because they regard themselves as rich in the life of God], that is humble, for they have the disposition of a right relationship with Jesus Christ. He must become greater; I must become less, as John the Baptist so dramatically said.
