BEYOND BELIEF FOR BRYAN

Wednesday, December 19th, 2018

On October 25 of this year, Bryan accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord and changed his addictions. Previously, he had been addicted to meth. Now he’s addicted to Jesus. Of all the inmates I’ve met with, he understands most clearly that you can’t just give up taking dope and get on with your life. The void of not using drugs needs to be replaced by something else, or the addiction will return to fill the void. Put another way, to say no to something, there needs to be a greater yes. That’s not just the case for Bryan. It’s true for all of us.

I keep notes on the inmates I talk to as a chaplain so I stay in touch with their specific spiritual needs. On November 15 of this year I wrote the following note: “Bryan knows more in less than a month about how he fits into God’s plan than some Christians I’ve known for 20 years.”

I come from a background in education, and I can say with all certainty that even if Bryan were Einstein, which he is not, he wouldn’t have been able to learn so much so fast on his own about God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, and the power and influence of the Holy Spirit. It’s beyond belief – like a 5th grader grasping the essentials of calculus in a month.

So if Bryan didn’t educate himself, who or what did? It’s really quite simple – hours and hours of reading the Bible and insights planted within him by the Holy Spirit. There’s no other explanation. I have to tell you that stories like Bryan’s strengthen my faith in the power of the Holy Spirit like nothing else does. I see God at work in men and women that can’t be explained by natural logic. They don’t choose to change. God changes them once they let Him into their lives.

This is wonderful news Pat! I so appreciate the opportunity to read about what God is doing by His Spirit, and through you as you serve Him as a disciple who is going and making disciples. Merry Christmas!
